Description

The Eastside Old-Timers inducted four new people into the Hall of Fame and two sponsors. Athletes who grew up on the Eastside are selected for their achievement in sports throughout their lifetime. The following were recipients of the award:

  • Thomas M. Ihnot Tom played basketball for DeLaSalle high school and was Player-Captain and All State Tournament 1965 & 1966. He attended the University of Minnesota and played Freshmen basketball 1966-1967 and played Varsity golf from 1966-1970. Tom Ihnot’s first Head Coaching as from assignment was Cannon Falls from 1974-1976. He moved to St. Thomas Academy in 1976 where he coached until 1989 compiling a record of 204-111. His overall record as a coach is 362-215. Tom was names Region 3AA Coach of the year in 1985 and again in 1988.
  • Bernie Kunza A graduate from Edison 1972 Bernie has been a coach for over 35 years coaching Football, Basketball, Soccer and Baseball. Over that time, he coached at Bottineau Park, NERO, Northeast Stars baseball, Edison Youth baseball, Northeast VFW and American Legion and Waite Park. He retired as the Head baseball coach at Edison high school after the 2022 season and has been the head clinician at Camp Tommie for almost 30 years. Bernie was President of the Northeast Boosters Club for 22 years and was instrumental in acquiring funds for the gym at Bottineau Park. Currently Bernie is a youth baseball clinician for the Minnesota Twins.
  • Ron Lyke Ron graduated from Edison and started training and boxing at the age of 17 at the Margaret Barry house he moved to the Eastside gym then moved to the Northeast Neighborhood house. Ron was a five time Minneapolis champion and four time Upper Midwest golden gloves champion. Ron has been a boxing coach since 1967 and has trained five fighters to become Upper Midwest golden gloves champions. He trained Caleb Truax to a world championship in 2017.
  • Michael J. Roff Mike is a Graduate from DeLaSalle in 1975 and lettered in Wrestling all four years he also played football and was All Conference honorable mention. Mike served his country from 1975-1978 and played softball and rugby and won the German physical fitness Award. In 1986 he set a Fort McCoy’s Military base physical fitness test record. He became founder of the Eastside Rugby Club and won the Midwest Junior Cup in 1982. Mike also coached the Rugby State tournament for five years and is a 30-year MSHSL Official with 15 State tournament appearances.
  • Tim and Mike Tuttle are the owners of Elsie’s Restaurant, Bar and Bowling. The Tuttle's are avid supports of Edison baseball and other activities as Edison as well youth activities around Northeast.

Also honored were the 1965 NE Boosters Cub football team that was unbeaten and unscored upon and became City Champions.

The Old Timers thank the many retail businesses and individuals that donated prizes for our Hall of Fame raffle. The money raised by the raffle supports youth sport teams in the Northeast and Southeast neighborhoods. The East Side Old Timers are seeking future Hall of Fame inductees (men and women) 55 years or older. The person must have been a resident of the East Side and achieved excellence in a sport or sports.
